This 10-day trekking expedition takes you deep into the Bale Mountains National Park, one of Ethiopia’s most spectacular and ecologically diverse regions. Encounter rare and endemic wildlife, including the Ethiopian wolf and mountain nyala, hike through pristine landscapes, and explore the rich biodiversity of the Sanetti Plateau and Harenna Forest. Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival & Optional Addis Ababa ExplorationArrive at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, where you will be warmly welcomed by Authentic Ethiopia Tours. Transfer to your hotel for check-in and relaxation. Depending on your arrival time, you may explore key attractions such as the National Museum, Holy Trinity Cathedral, or Entoto Park.
Day 2
Fly to Bale Goba & Drive to DinshoTake a domestic flight to Robe, where you will meet your driver and guide. Drive to Dinsho, the headquarters of Bale Mountains National Park. Explore the park and the Gaysay grasslands, home to endemic mountain nyalas, warthogs, and bushbucks. Enjoy birdwatching in one of Ethiopia’s most renowned birding destinations.
Day 3
Trek from Dinsho to Adeley (5-6 hours)Begin your trekking adventure with a scenic hike from Dinsho to Adeley, traversing woodlands and spotting endemic wildlife along the way. Overnight camping in the forested highlands.
Day 4
Trek from Adeley to Sodota (5-6 hours)Continue trekking through farmsteads and open plains towards Sodota Camp. This area is a prime habitat for the endemic Ethiopian wolf—keep an eye out for these rare predators. En route, stop by the picturesque Finch-Abera Waterfall, a hidden gem offering spectacular views.
Day 5
Trek Sodota to Wasema(App. 5hrs)Ascend to the plateau, trekking through landscapes adorned with silvery everlasting flowers. Arrive at Wasema Camp, situated near the base of Mount Wasema. Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views and the remoteness of this pristine wilderness.
Day 6
Trek from Wasema to Rafu Camp (Approx. 4 hours)Cross the high-altitude plateau to Rafu Camp, nestled within a striking natural ‘stone forest’. For an added challenge, opt for an ascent to a nearby peak, offering stunning views of the Harenna Forest.
Day 7
Trek from Rafu to Harenna Forest (Optional Tulu Dimtu Summit - 4,377m)Trek across the windswept plateau with the option to summit Mount Tulu Dimtu, Ethiopia’s second-highest peak at 4,377m, for spectacular 360° views. Descend into the lush Harenna Cloud Forest, where you will set up camp amid bamboo groves and lichen-draped trees.
Day 8
Explore Harenna Forest & Trek to Gerba GurachaDrive a short distance to the Sanetti Plateau for easier access to the trek up Tulu Dimtu. This high-altitude plateau, Africa’s largest Afro-alpine ecosystem, attracts diverse wildlife and migratory birds. Hike to Gerba Guracha, known for its abundant Helichrysum (everlasting) flowers and unique rodent species. Overnight camping at Gerba Guracha.
Day 9
Gerba Guracha – Sanetti Plateau – Drive to HawassaAfter breakfast, trek for 2-3 hours to meet your vehicle. Drive through the breathtaking Sanetti Plateau, where you may encounter the endangered Ethiopian wolf. The landscape features alpine lakes, Giant Lobelias, and evergreen shrubs. Continue the drive to Hawassa, a beautiful lakeside city, and check in at Haile Resort for a relaxing evening.
Day 10
Hawassa Fish Market Visit & Return to Addis AbabaIn the early morning, visit Hawassa’s lively fish market, an excellent spot for birdwatching and local culture. Begin the journey back to Addis Ababa, with a stop at Lake Ziway for more bird spotting. Arrive in Addis Ababa in the late afternoon. Enjoy a farewell dinner at a traditional cultural restaurant before transferring to the airport for departure.
